Working on a primitive fish basket in the Amazon jungle. Luckily we had plentiful corsage resources, therefore obtaining the vines to make this was rather easy (minus having navigating the jungle barefoot). Cordage is always a valuable resource in survival, and sometimes it is hard to come by. For the foundation of the basket, I used palm saplings which were already perfectly straight. I used 7 of them for the base (always using an odd number for weaving.) Between collecting the vines, saplings, and making the basket, the task took me a full day’s of work. It had a wide opening (necessary for fish to feel comfortable entering) and was about 3.5 feet in length. I used palm nuts, tarantula, and grubs to bait it. It retreated me a couple of small fish that I later used to bait red-bellied piranha. If you’re wondering what piranha taste like, the answer is not that good. It was rather bland but quite fishy at the same time. It was not nearly as delicious as the Amazon peacock bass – one of the most delicious fish I have ever eaten.
